2006-2007 Domestic European Leagues |
|
Olympique Lyon have made it a stunning six French championships in
a row, easily taking the 2006-2007 crown. In England, Manchester United
returned to their glorious days of the 1990's as they bested
the two time defending champions Chelsea for the Premiership. Bayern
Munich's days of dominance ended as they finished a meek fourth in
the Bundesliga, clearing the way for VfB Stuttgart to win the title.
Inter Milan, having taken last season's Seria A title by default, easily retained
their title in the wake of a match fixing scandal that left Juventus to
fight for ascension in Serie B while crippling European champions AC Milan
with a points deduction.
PSV Eindhoven made it three in a row in the Netherlands, while
RSC Anderlecht, FC Porto, and Celtic Glasgow all made it two in a row
in their respective leagues. Real Madrid edged out Barcelona for the Spanish
championship.

World Cup 2006 |
|
Italy are world champions after defeating France in the final on penalty kicks, the match
having ended in a 1-1 draw. This was Italy's fourth title, the other three coming in 1930,
1934, and 1982. France came close to winning their second title, but failed in the final's
shootout in spite of being the better team. Italy's path to the final saw them breeze through
their group, crushing the Czech Republic and Ghana, and drawing against the USA. Italy
then faced Australia in the round of 16, needing a dubious injury time penalty to win, then
faced surprise quarter-finalist Ukraine, and finally knocking out the home side Germany in
extra time of the semi-finals. France struggled in their group, settling for draws against
Switzerland and South Korea, and finally defeating Togo to advance. France then defeated
high-flying Spain in the round-of-16, shocked Brazil in the quarters, and got by Portugal
in the semis. Germany took third place, having knocked out Argentina in the quarter-finals.
