Histora.org newsletter May 24, 2000 Real Madrid are European Champions for the 8th time after taking down Valencia 3-0 in the final. This is Real's second title in 3 years, and 10th European trophy overall. Real Madrid's run into the final was unimpressive in the earlier stages, but the club seemed to come alive after beating defending Champions Manchester United at Old Trafford in the quarter finals. Valencia earned their way into the final with upset after upset, most notably Lazio Rome in the quarter-finals and Barcelona in the semis. The UEFA Cup was won by Galatasaray Istanbul. Turkey hence becomes the 17th nation to lift at least one European trophy, along with Italy and England (both 26), Spain (24), Germany (15), The Netherlands (10), Portugal and Belgium (4), 3 each for Scotland and the old Soviet Union (2 for Ukraine, 1 for Georgia actually), 2 each for France, Sweden, and the old Yugoslavia (which includes 1 for Croatia), and 1 each for Romania, Czechoslovakia (Slovakia), Hungary, and the old East Germany. You can change this behaviour on Histora, making it so that Dynamo Kiev's points go to the Ukraine even when they were part of the Soviet Union. You can also make it so that in the club rankings, Dynamo Kiev will show up once as an entity under the Soviet Union, and once under Ukraine for the points it has earned since the split. As far as the domestic scene goes, if we look at the English, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Scottish, Dutch, Belgian, and German leagues over the past 10 years, here are the rankings if we award 12 points for finishing 1st in the league, 9 for second, 7 for 3rd, 6 for 4th, 5 for 5th, 4 for 6th, etc : ============================================================= # Club Nat TPs Aps 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 ============================================================= 1.
